Fiber Development
Drive adoption of FSC certification by implementing supply and demand solutions across fiber value chains (paper, packaging, textiles).
Recognition and demand for FSC creates a ‘pull’ effect signaling to the rest of the value chain that there is a demand for FSC certification. Therefore, key downstream objectives include working with PSU and TM to provide normative solutions for verified procurement claims; increasing awareness of FSC by working with influential B2B partners and collaborating with innovators and other organizations. From a supply side perspective, the main objective remains to collaborate with forest owners to increase awareness about FSC certification through key projects and partnerships.
As a new value chain, textiles’ objectives differ slightly. One very significant challenge is that the value chain is long and fragmented, making an intact CoC difficult. To tackle this challenge, several objectives have been set, including optimizing CoC to facilitate certified garments in the market by creating awareness about CoC solutions and increasing awareness of FSC in textiles by working with influential and strategic B2B partners, network partners and aligned NGOs.
Today, forest-based fibers also known as manmade cellulosic fibers (MMCFs) are the fastest growing textile fiber in the market. Only 50 per cent of MMCFs are certified where FSC holds a 25 per cent share. The objective by 2026 in line with the GS is to increase this share and enable more FSC labelled garments in the market.
Main outputs
- As of January 2021, all of SIG and Tetra Pak’s paperboard is FSC certified.
- Two innovative paper bottle companies Paboco and Pulpex have achieved CoC certification and have set a preference for FSC fiber.
- In September, we are launching an open letter initiative titled Forest Forever Green Pact. The objective of this letter is two-fold, first for brand owners and retailers to commit to a preference for FSC MMCFs and a goal to label a product by 2025, and for manufacturers to get CoC certification.
