Members propose motions to prioritise issues or ideas that are important for the development of FSC. A motion is a proposal to change or create a FSC Policy or Statute through member discussion, debate and voting. Statutory motions are proposals to amend the FSC Statutes or Principles & Criteria. The FSC Board of Directors is mandated by the FSC AC statutes to manage the organization. The board of directors is the highest decision-making body in the organization after the FSC General Assembly (which is the supreme authority of the organization), being elected by the FSC membership to guide and provide oversight to the organization.
We hosted two identical meetings to allow the participation of our global membership. These took place via Zoom.

The FSC general assembly is FSC’s highest decision-making body, attracting hundreds of participants from indigenous people, environmentalists, business and others in FSC membership. The GA is traditionally held every three years, however the general assembly planned for 2020 was re-scheduled to take place in two parts at the 2021-2022 general assembly. The first part took place virtually in 2021 and the second part will take place as a hybrid event with in-person and online components.

FSC is presenting a new piece of research intended to inform the process to create a fair and feasible FSC Remedy Framework. Entitled “A study on the economics of remedy in the context of forest conversion,” this piece of work was completed by an independent consulting agency.
We have come a long way on climate and ecosystem services (CES) over the past two years. We now have a stronger market position, three value propositions, a business model progressing towards implementation, technology roadmap, and not least a strong team in Bonn and in three regions.
The report on the revision of the FSC Principles and Criteria (Version 5-2) is now available for a 50-day public consultation. The main proposal is that FSC should wait until 2023 to revise its Principles and Criteria because the transition of all FSC national standards to the latest Principles and Criteria (Version 5-2) is still ongoing.

We are pleased to announce the launch of a Discussion Forum channel on the first FSC Global Strategy Dialogues and a new subsection with all the outcomes from the first round. Additionally, you can already register for the second FSC Global Strategy Dialogues to be held on 22, 23 & 24 September 2020.
FSC thanks Earthsight and the co-signing NGOs for their open letter dated 25 October 2021 and their ongoing engagement and concern to protect the world’s forests and make them more resilient. We continuously act to strengthen forest stewardship and welcome constructive criticism to improve our system where necessary.
In mid-February 2016, the working group tasked to address Motion 12 of the 2014 Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) General Assembly (GA), held its second meeting in Bonn Germany. The working group, which is currently drafting a policy proposal, aims to consult FSC members about the details in April 2016.
The FSC Remedy Framework is now open for public consultation, until 10 May 2022. FSC looks forward to receiving inputs and suggestions from its stakeholders on ways to improve the efficacy of the FSC Remedy Framework. The objective of this document is to specify the requirements for FSC-accredited certification bodies for developing Interim National Standard (INS) or Interim Regional Standard (IRS), depending on the geographic scope of the standard, for the certification of responsible forest management and the responsible management of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) at the Management Unit (MU) level. These standards shall be based on the International Generic Indicators (IGI) and shall address the regional, national or sub-national conditions in which they are to be used and shall consider input from local stakeholders. The FSC Board of Directors at FSC International, acting through the Policy Steering Group (PSG) shall approve Interim National Standards (INS) before they can be used for FSC certification purposes. In March 2020 the revised procedure was published to reflect the FSC Board of Directors’ decision during their 82nd meeting to delegate the approval of INS to the Policy Steering Group.
