Climate Change and Biodiversity
Forests are frontline defenders against climate change and biodiversity loss. Topics in this session will include:
- How FSC standards can strengthen forests' resilience to climate change.
- Protecting and restoring biodiversity in managed forests.
- The role of FSC certification in global climate and conservation strategies’.

FSC Members propose motions to prioritize issues or ideas that are important for the development of FSC. A motion is a proposal to change or create an FSC Policy or Statute through member discussion, debate and voting. Submitting a motion is one of the most important actions an FSC member can take. Statutory motions are proposals to amend the FSC Statutes or Principles & Criteria while Policy motions are proposals for amendments to FSC policies or operational procedures.

Social Aspects
Responsible forest management must consider people as well. This discussion will cover key issues such as:
The rights of Indigenous Peoples and their role in forest governance.
Workers' rights, including fair wages, safe working conditions, and collective bargaining.
Gender equality and how forestry can be more inclusive and equitable.

The BBC recently reported on allegations against the Korindo Group (Korindo) concerning its oil palm operations in Indonesia. The report referenced the action taken by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) following the FSC Policy for Association complaint made against Korindo in 2017. With the release of the FSC Global Strategic Plan 2015-2020, FSC is declaring our intention to more than double our share of global forest-based trade in the next five years, to 20 per cent.
Members of the Economic chamber of FSC International will meet in Uppsala, Sweden, on January 23-24, to discuss priorities related to the boreal forest and the FSC Global Strategic Plan. The meeting involves members and FSC staff mainly from Canada, US, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
