This High-Level Conference took place online on 10 December 2020.
The purpose of this high-level session was to discuss how different actors can work together to develop forest stewardship and robust verification mechanisms, complementing other efforts carried out under public and private initiatives to meet global targets.
The event had a focus on four main themes:
- Climate Change – Julianne Baroody from Verra, which manages a standard for certifying carbon emissions reductions (the Verified Carbon Standard), discussed the climate change mitigation benefits – and potential financial benefits to forest managers – of responsible forest management practices such as those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
- Biodiversity – Nelson Kroll from Maderacre, a forestry company in the Peruvian Amazon, talked about their engagement to demonstrate positive impact on biodiversity through certification of ecosystem services.
- Forests for People and Nature – Juan Anzieta from Arauco, a global forestry company headquartered in Chile, talked about their efforts to create forest value for people through certification of ecosystem services and engagement with surrounding populations.
- Human rights (Indigenous Peoples’ rights) – Luis-Felipe Duchicela, Senior Advisor for Indigenous Peoples' Issues at USAID, The United States Agency for International Development, presented their new Indigenous Peoples’ Policy and how many of its ideas are reflected in a new Global Development Alliance with FSC to enable Indigenous Peoples to secure their rights and improve their livelihoods.
The topics covered in the four presentations were brought together in a panel discussion facilitated by Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, an environmentalist and advocate for indigenous people.

This High-Level Conference took place online on 10 December 2020.
Members of the Board Strategic Planning Committee (BSPC) and invited panelists discussed different important issues related to the new Global Strategy 2021-2026 while addressing what the strategy can mean for their topic of focus.
The session was facilitated by John Ramsay, many times the facilitator of FSC General Assemblies. It was introduced by Al Thorne and Zandra Martinez, Board of Directors and BSPC members discussing what they see as the main new elements in the strategy and how they expect it will change FSC.
Chris Elliott, Executive Director of the Climate and Land Use Alliance (CLUA) and member of the External Advisory Group for the Global Strategy, reflected on how the new strategy compares to where FSC came from over 25 years ago.
This was followed by three thematic sessions, cross-referencing the discussion with elements of the 3 strategies, goals and intended outcomes:
- Leveraging the role of FSC as a facilitator of co–created forest-based innovative solutions for Climate Change:
Pina Gervassi, FSC International Climate Change Director and Walter Vergara Senior Fellow at World Resources Institute (WRI)
- Demonstrating the value and impacts of FSC through unleashing the power of data:
Michael Marus, FSC International’s Global Chief Information Officer and Director of IT and Enrica Porcari, Chief Information Officer and Director of Technology of the World Food Programme (WFP) and member of the External Advisory Group for the Global Strategy
- Scaling up benefits for smallholders and Indigenous Peoples:
Vera Santos, FSC International New Approaches Project Manager and Francisco Souza, FSC Indigenous Foundation Managing Director.
To close this session and pave the way forward, Kim Carstensen, FSC International Director General, reflected on the discussions, perspectives, and opportunities to continue building the path for the years to come, together.

FSC International members will choose a new Board Member to replace Mr. Estevão do Prado Braga as a representative of the Economic South Sub-Chamber. Mr. do Prado Braga tendered his resignation from this position at the last Board meeting in March. His term should normally have ended in 2021, but he will only remain a Board Member until the end of 2019.
FSC International’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Frank Harnischfeger, is stepping down from his position on 30 August 2023.
FSC has approved two new advice notes to address conflicting legislation and differing interpretations of laws and regulations:
- ADVICE-20-007-21 applies to all certification bodies with FM in their accreditation scope.
- ADVICE-20-011-11 applies to all certification bodies with CoC in their accreditation scope.

The first draft of the FSC Conversion Remedy Procedure (FSC-PRO-01-007 V1-0 D1-0) will be available for a public consultation from 1 April to 31 May 2020 and will be accessible here.
A revised New Zealand FSC Forest Stewardship Standard has been published and is effective on 15 April 2023.
Every year, FSC International organizes its flagship event with accredited certification bodies (CBs) and Assurance Services International (ASI) – the Annual FSC-CB Meeting in Bonn, Germany. It represents a forum for active discussions, calibrations, and engagement opportunities. CBs are independent organizations who are accredited to issue FSC certificates and manage the whole certification process.
Advice notes to implement FSC Board decisions and to enforce the maintenance of Forest Stewardship Standards are now available in the Document Centre.

Revisions of FSC Forest Stewardship Standards are ongoing, and all existing standards will be transferred to the revised Principles & Criteria version 5-2. All standards are valid until replaced by a new FSC Forest Stewardship Standard.

The following requirements aim to ensure that the certification body decision making entity has sufficient information on which to base its decisions with respect to conformity with FSC forest stewardship standards, and to help FSC ensure that there is consistency in decision making between different certification bodies.
FSC had decided to waive the Annual Administration Fee (AAF) for all types of certifications in Ukraine from Q2/2022 until the end of Q4/2024, regardless of their certification status.
In August 2024, FSC decided to reinstate the AAF for certifications in Ukraine starting 01 January 2025 in a phased approach.
This Advice Note serves to implement this decision.

The social impacts of forest management mean that forest management is a social as a well as a technical activity. It is not possible to involve all stakeholders in every forest evaluation. It is therefore essential that forest certification and its results should be open to public scrutiny. This is the only way to demonstrate to all interested or affected parties that the certification decisions are justified and acceptable. It is a basic requirement of the FSC scheme that certification bodies make a summary report of each certified forest operation publicly available.
This document provides FSC’s formal interpretation of requirements included in FSC-STD-20-007. An updated version was published on 1 August 2024.
The objective of this standard is to provide the requirements for FSC-accredited certification bodies to assess conformity of The Organization against applicable requirements of the FSC normative
framework with regards to forest management certification, as well as reporting and decision making.

Depending on when the unacceptable activity occurs/occurred, FSC will determine which policy version is used as the point of reference. If the unacceptable activity occurred prior to 2023, version 2-0 of the policy will be applied, whereas if the unacceptable activity occurs in 2023 or beyond, version 3-0 of the Policy for Association will be applied. To access Policy for Association, version 2-0, click here . The Policy for Association is an expression of the values shared by individuals and organizations associated with FSC. It defines six unacceptable activities that associated individuals and organizations and their corporate group commit to avoid in both certified and non-certified operations. The Policy for Association serves as a risk management tool for FSC, protecting the credibility and reputation of the FSC brand and organizations associated with it.
This guide is intended for organizations that wish to use the FSC trademarks for the promotion of FSC-certified labelled products or services and it replaces the FSC-STD-50-002 'Requirements for promotional use of the FSC trademarks by non-certificate holders' that was withdrawn on 31st May 2020.
FSC Remedy Framework defines permanent and effective measures required for remedy of harm caused by unacceptable activities as defined by the Policy for the Association of Organizations with FSC V2-0 or by conversion between 1 December 1994 and 31 December 2020.
